Titan arum

The Corpse Flower is freakishly large and smells bad, by all accounts. I haven’t seen or smelled one in real life. It is on my mind today, though, as it is extraordinarily phallic  in appearance.

I came to a point today where the most logical next move was to add a penis to a particular painting. This is, after all, a show inspired by animus. For it to be entirely dickless would be strange. But the last time I showed a painting that included a penis- an ambiguous shape that MAY have been a penis, really- I annoyed a bunch of people at a church. The painting was hidden in a closet. So I hesitate.

In a compromise that some might call a pussy move – okay, now I’ve offended everyone I might know so thank gourd nobody reads this blog- I am thinking about letting phallic flowers stand in for penises. But it may too coy and smarmy and clever. I don’t know.

In the meantime, nothing large is finished but slow progress continues.

Desperado

I have four weeks left to finish some big paintings for this show.

Progress in the studio is steady but slow. I am covered in paint and sweat. It isn’t pretty.

A little good news

One of my few favorite self-made paintings, “Step into My Parlor,” has been accepted into the 28th Annual All Colorado Art Show at the Curtis Arts & Humanities Center .

This is more important to me than it probably should be; I have a history of bad luck with juries, despite my good luck with interesting and lovely people who seem to come out of nowhere, are genuinely enthusiastic about my work and even buy it sometimes. I am always surprised – and thankful- when I get selected for a juried show.

I’m tired of waiting for something…”

Small Painting Frenzy

In preparation for the Art Students League of Denver’s Summer Art Market, I’ve been finishing as many small paintings as possible.

“Spit in the Wind,” 10″ x 10″.

“First Flight,” 5″ x 5″.

“The Beast Bows,” 6″ x 6″.

“Summer Bride,” 5″ x 5″.

“Voice of Reason,” 5″ x 5″.

“The Storyteller,” 6″ x 6″.

“Mountain of Gief,” 5″ x 5″.

“Plenty of Fish,” 5″ x 5″.

“The Joker,” 5″ x 5″.

“Pupae,” 5″ x 5″.

I’ll be sharing booth # 24 with Claudia Roulier, one of my favorite artists in Denver.

The Devil Made Me Do It.

Monotype, 7. 5″ x  5.5″.

Plus some gratuitous Etta James, just because I love it.

Buffalo

Monotype, 6″ x 8″.

AndSoButThen

Oil on canvas, 16″x 12″.

“Scorned Lovers”

I am happy to have several paintings hanging in the Scorned Lovers Show at The Art Salon, which runs until the end of March.

It is raining tonight in Denver. Dashed hopes and vain fancies swirl through the gutters and wash down into storm drains.

Safe and Warm (as ugly as I seem)

This year’s Christmas card – the usual quick block print method- had some surprises.

Hand-marbling paper is always a little unpredictable. The red and green paint I used in the marbling bath left a select few nutcrackers looking like they were dying in a bloody storm of gunfire. I sent those cards out anyway, but only to friends who would (hopefully) understand.

After a weirdly warm spell in Denver, it feels like our snow will come in tonight.

I’m ready for it. I’m making fruitcake tonight using a variation on Alton Brown’s recipe- no nasty jellied fruits, just good dried fruit, lots of nuts and even more brandy.

Trying very hard to be of good cheer.

Hope you are safe and warm who ever you are, where ever you are.

The Hubris of Hare

Oil on canvas, 6″ x 6″.

I will be showing a handful of new small paintings, including this one, at the Zip 37 Gallery Members’ Show, which opens this December 17 and runs until January 23.
