The Bluebird of Happiness in the Clearing of Common Confusions

Bluebird

It seems I will have work in 3 shows that have opening receptions on the evening of December 11th.

This has never happened to me before, but it’s a nice problem to have. I am counting my blessings.

One is the previously mentioned Art Market at the Arvada Center.

The second is The Unity Church of Denver, who have accepted 13 of my paintings for their “Angels” show.

Thirdly, I’ll be showing with at CORE with two very talented artists, Terri Bell and Melissa Rackliff.

Little things

I’m working on small paintings for the 23rd Annual Fine Art market Show and Sale at The Arvada Center for the Arts & Humanities.

Here are a couple that are finished. They’re only 6″ x 6″- about the size of a bathroom tile!

Bee Minus Hive Mind:

I need to concentrate and finish at least a dozen more.

Little melancholy with a restless mind.

Making Halloween junk

I’ve been taking a break from working on (ostensibly) salable  art to make tasteless yard props for Halloween.

It’s been a lot of fun. I’m glad we don’t have a neighborhood association to answer to.

Here’s TJ Hooker:

And a corpse bride I’m still working on:

Other stuff in the grave yard/front yard includes a modified arm that once belonged to, then fell off of a 3-d billboard. I’ve kept it in my studio for years, knowing it would come in handy some day.

Our cat Diablo seems to approve.

Filling Every Depth, Flooding Every Shore

Oil on Canvas, 40″ x 30″.FillingEveryDepthFloodingEveryShore

My show “Cellardoor” opens tonight.

I’m nervous, as always. I have a couple of paintings in there that I haven’t even had a chance to photograph yet.

If you’re in Denver, please come by and take a look. It will be happening here.

One of my former professors, Craig Marshall Smith, had an essay published in the Denver Post recently titled “Doomed to Be an Artist.” It’s a good read. You can find it here.

His expression, “hearts on the walls” makes me reflect on why I always feel so vulnerable at my own openings.

My show will close on Sunday September 27th at 5 PM.

Cheers.

It’s Raining Today

Again. A little bit.

Summer Storms

We have had more rain in Denver this summer than I can remember, ever.

Our garden has thus far escaped the hail. I cross my fingers for continued good fortune.

Raindance

It’s time for the Carnation Festival here in Wheat Ridge, which always makes me feel like summer is over.

Shriners will be lining up on my street tomorrow, honking their horns and getting ready for the parade down 38th street.

If you live in Denver and have the chance, Gina Smith Caswell’s newest paintings at Next Gallery in the Navajo street art district are well worth a look.

Chewy explorations of hair and flesh in paint. They’ll be up for three more weekends.

Cronebirthing

Oil on canvas, 40″ x 30″.

CroneThis one is a little  different than usual. I started it after learning of the death of one of my drawing teachers from way back.

Her name was Jean Schiff. She was tough, demanding, dedicated and funny. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of Jean’s work online but you can see a handful of her drawings here.

Feeling a little stressed out trying to finish 11 paintings in time for my opening on September 11. Trying to keep hopelessness at bay with 5 hour energy drinks and boxed wine. Probably a terrible idea.
